The Navoi Theatre is the State Academic Grand Theatre in Tashkent. It is situated in the heart of the city and is considered to be one of the most beautiful places.
The story of the musical theatre goes back to the 1920s when a team of enthusiasts from the concert-ethnographic group led by M. Kari-Yakubov founded a professional theatre. In 1939 the theatre staged its first opera and was named the State Uzbek Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1948 was renamed after the great Uzbek poet- Alisher Navoi State Opera and Ballet Theatre. The theatre was given the rank of Academic Theatre and became the Grand Theatre in 1966.
The building of the theatre was designed by Soviet architect Alexei Schusev, who also designed Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square. The whole building is decorated by the works of Uzbekistan’s artists. The interior is decorated with ganch carving and every hall bears the name of a city in Uzbekistan. The halls, therefore, are decorated following the traditions of a particular city. The halls and passages are decorated in a unique way illustrating the poems of Alisher Navoi and the popular sights of Uzbekistan.
The theatre is the pride of the nation and always the centre of the country’s musical theatrical life. Along with the plays of Uzbek composers the theatre’s repertoire includes world-known classical operas and ballets.
In front of the Theatre, there is a fountain in the form of cotton, which symbolizes the main natural national wealth of Uzbekistan. The square fountain is called the Singing Fountain. The fountain jets are coloured and they dance to classical music. Currently, this area is called Theatre Square, which is very popular among locals and tourists.
