Navoiy

Navoiy city is the largest educational and administrative centre in Navoiy Province of Uzbekistan with a population of 215000 (Uzbeks consist 73,2%, Russians – 16,5%, Kazakhs - 1,3% and other nationalities consist of 9%). Navoiy is one of the cities in Uzbekistan where all Russian speakers constitute 16 per cent of the total population.

The city is located in the valley of the river Zeravshan, which flows to the north, in Northern Navoiy Province and in the south-west from the capital city Tashkent (360 km). The distance between Samarkand and Navoiy is 140 km, as well as between Bukhara and Navoiy is 100 km. 10 km far from the city to the north spreads Nuratau Mountains which is a hallway of nature.

The city was established during the period of the Soviet Union when it was located in the territory of Bukhara Province. The construction of mining and metallurgical combine was started in 1958, and also a new city was founded and named Navoiy in honour of famous Uzbek poet and philosopher Alisher Navoiy.

The most popular and tourist-attracted place is the South Park with its stadium, swimming pool and theatres. Recently, North Park, also named Alisher Navoiy, has been built which is by territory larger than South Park. Famous places for a holiday are the base centre of Navoiy mining and metallurgical combine “Azure” situated on the bank of Tudakul Lake and Sarmish mountainous camp located 30 km away from the city to Nuratau Mountains. Additionally, there are famous streets, castles and monasteries, such as Khalklar Dustligi Avenue also called as ‘Friendship of Nations’ which is the main street of the city, Rabati Malik Caravanserai Ruin, Rabati Malik Caravanserai Cistern (Malik Sardoba) and Saint Sergiuy Radonezhkogo Church.
