Termez city is an administrative centre and the largest city in Surkhandar region. It is located on the right bank of the river Amu Darya which is close to the border of Afghanistan. The distance to Afghan Mazari-Sharif takes about 80 km, and to the largest city Kabul takes more than 425 km. Also, the way to the north-west, Karshi and Bukhara cities, takes about 250 and 430 km respectively, and to the third largest city Samarkand is about 330 km. However, the distance to the north-east capital city of Tajikistan, Dushanbe and capital city of Uzbekistan, Tashkent takes approximately 235 and 650 km respectively.
During the period of Afghan company, the city Termez was the important military base and a bridge, called “Friendship Bridge”, has been built on the river Amu Darya connecting two countries: Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
Termez city is one of the ancient cities in Central Asia and there are many famous places, such as State Archaeological Museum, Al Hakim At-Termizi Mausoleum, Sultan Saadat’s mausoleums complex and the ruins of Kyrk-Kyz Fortress.
